Application of Linear Active Disturbance Rejection Control to Power System Load Frequency Control

In this paper, linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC) is employed to deal with the load frequency control (LFC) problem in power systems with a single generator supplying power to a single service area. First, the general (n+1)th order LADRC is given, and then the parameter tuning procedures are presented. It is followed by the description of an LFC problem, in which the case of a single generator supplying power to a single service area is discussed and three different types of turbines, including non-reheated, reheated, and hydro turbine, employed for generation are considered. The LADRC is designed for the three types of turbines, and simulation results are compared to the traditional PID control strategy. With the proposed LADRC approach, the system performance is much better than that of the traditional PID controller. The LADRC demonstrates strong robustness against varying parameters, which is also validated by the computed performance indices.
